From the readings this week I thought it was really important to always remember and take into consideration working with the teachers in your building. We talk about this concept often, and since it comes up so often it is so important to follow through with this in your career. Collaboration is such a huge part of the success of a library. I also enjoyed the section about the evaulation of your library and yourself as a librarian. I think that knowing what is done well in your library, and what needs improvement plays a large role in the success of the library.
The search engines for kids page that was provided to look at was full of so many useful and fun sites for kids to look at and use. I loved the boolify site and I'm a big fan of the kidsclick site. I think it's so important for kids to have sites that are safe and fun to use while being informational and easy to navigate.
I really like the variety of advanced search techniques that google has to offer. It's helpful to be able to define yoru search by type of document. I can see me using the powerpoint document more often than others. It will be something to work with in the future to become more comfortable with.
I would absolutely use scavenger hunts with my students. Scavenger hunts are such a great way to let students go on their own to investigate, use their knowledge, and ask questions to figure out their answers. I think scavenger hunts are very beneficial to the progress and success of being able to search on their own.
I'm working with Kari on presenting CultureGrams for the database presentation. It's coming along really well and I'm learning so much about a database that I have never known about. It's been really beneficial working with her on this project. I'm a little behind on my lesson topic. I'm still trying to figure that one out.
I'm really excited because I really used animoto for the first time. I put a slide show together for work to promote our camp programs to show to potential summer camp families. Class this week has opened me up to using the google advanced tools. I think I'll have to play around with it a little bit more to fully understand it and get used to it. I also liked learning about all the google quick search items (calculator, conversions, definitions, weather, flights, etc.) That is something that I will definately be using in the future and it will save time in the long run. I also really enjoyed looking at all the internet logs. All the sites were great and I can see myself using them.

I agree with your comments about collaboration. It is a very important part of our job. We need to support all stakeholders. I think that as technology integraters, we have an obligation to "push" teachers to use technology so the students get to use it.
ReplyDeleteI also agree totally about collaboration being such an important part of our jobs. I always looked at myself as kind of the "hub" where people from all over the school could come to me for assistance, and also, as that "hub", I could connect teachers with other teachers within the building. In addition, I could connect all staff to resources that I had in the library media center and on the Internet. That analogy really helped me in my work with staff. I think you will find it valuable to you and your patrons, to know about different search engines and search strategies. You and they will be able to find valid, reliable and current information efficiently! Hooray!
